Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and ies4linux – Installation

Installing ies4linux on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala by just running “./ies4linux” might show some warnings such as:

IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x). It seems that you are using an old version. It’s recommended that you update your wine to the latest version (Go to: winehq.com).

In my case it showed the above text, which seems to be a warning, and run the UI but then got stuck and didn’t complete anything.

To overcome this issue simply run the installation without the GTK based UI in a terminal window:

./ies4linux –no-gui

That’s it. Works like a charm.

  1. 1. Extract ies4linux-2.99.0.tar.gz..
    2. Locate the extracted folder..
    3.Open the extracted folder
    3. Click ies4linux. A window will appear “Do you want to run ies4linux or display its contents”
    4. Run in terminal
    5. On the terminal window.. Something will appear like this

IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x). It seems that you are using an old version. It’s recommended that you update your wine to the latest version (Go to: winehq.com).

    6. disregard that message and type this one on the same terminal window
    ./ies4linux –no-gui

    7. You’re good to go to install IE, Click OK and let the program do its task

  2. Hi,

If you want to install this in 10.10, after obtaining the ies4linux-2.99.0.tar.gz, you have to change in the lib/install.sh file every instance of wineprefixcreate and create_wine_prefix to winecfg, because wineprefixcreate (and hence the function create_wine_prefix which calls wineprefixcreate) is deprecated.

    I only got a problem with flash, but I don’t need it anyway – IE6 launches :-)
